There are many benefits to having halogen flood light bulbs illuminating your yard or the exterior of your home rather than some of the other traditional kinds of light bulbs. The three main benefits to using halogen flood light bulbs are the amount of energy it saves compared to traditional incandescent lights, the better quality of light produced from halogen lighting, and the longer life when compared to incandescent lighting.
Before discussing the benefits of halogen flood light bulbs it is important to understand the actual difference between halogen incandescent lights and traditional incandescent lights. The basic function of incandescent lighting is that a filament in the bulb is heated and then glows to produce a source of light. In traditional incandescent light bulbs, the filament evaporates and builds up on the interior surface of the bulb, where as in halogen bulbs the halogen gas within the bulb carries some of the evaporated filament material back to the central filament. This is what gives halogen flood light bulbs a longer life.

The first of the three major benefits of halogen flood lights is the energy efficient factor. Halogen flood light bulbs produce more light per watt than most other traditional light bulbs, and the fact that they do this saves you money on your energy bill. Although fluorescent bulbs are much more energy efficient than halogen bulbs, you get a warmer and brighter light of an incandescent bulb without sacrificing too much of your wallet to your energy bill.
A much better quality of light is another added benefit of choosing halogen flood lighting. Many people feel that incandescent lighting provides for a warmer and more potent production of light than the fluorescent bulbs. Choosing halogen flood light bulbs will give you the warmer incandescent light without costing you an arm and a leg. However, even halogen bulbs produce more light than traditional incandescent bulbs. The actual amount of light produced from halogen bulbs is greater than other forms of lighting. Since flood lights are generally used for accenting yard elements, covering large yard areas, or security reasons, a superior light quality is important when selecting a type of flood lighting.

As mentioned earlier, the third benefit of halogen flood light bulbs are the longer lives they have when compared to traditional incandescent lighting. Because the halogen gas returns much of the evaporated filament material, halogen bulbs last on average about 2,000 hours longer. However, the lives of halogen flood light bulbs are generally less than fluorescent light bulbs. When factoring in the cost and time of replacing burned out flood lights, halogen light bulbs can save you time and money without sacrificing the light quality that comes with incandescent lighting.
Although halogen flood lights save energy, produce more light, and have a long life, they are not always better than other forms of traditional lighting like incandescent or fluorescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are cheaper to buy than halogen bulbs are, and fluorescent bulbs are generally more efficient and last longer.
