When you think of light bulbs, you may think of standard incandescent bulbs and you may even use CFL or fluorescent bulbs, but have you thought very much about LED light bulbs? Standard light bulbs were the brain child of people like Thomas Edison, and Fluorescents have begun to take their place in homes with the newest versions of the CFL bulbs. Enter the current generation of LED light bulbs (Light Emitting Diodes). There are many advantages to using LED light bulbs, and here are some of the reasons why they are lighting up our world.
One of the first reasons more and more people are beginning to use LED light bulbs is the fact that they are so durable. Incandescent bulbs have a filament that can break, and they tend to burn out in a relatively short period of time. In contrast, LED light bulbs have no filament and are actually diodes in a rubber bulb so they are much more durable that other types of lighting. They are not as sensitive to vibration because there is no filament to break, and can be used in a variety of applications. Durability often translates into a longer life, and these little beauties tend to last between 30 and 40 thousand hours with a potential to last twice or three times that long.

That leads us to the next reason more individuals are incorporating LED light bulbs into their lighting schemes, and that is to save money. With the longevity of these bulbs, you could replace incandescent bulbs many times while still using your original LED. The savings on actual light bulbs is apparent, but what about the additional energy savings you could be racking up. Standard bulbs are sold by the number of watts they use, such as 60 watt bulbs; however, light is generally measured in lumens for better comparison of the amount of light but out by different types of bulbs. While a 60 watt standard bulb puts out anywhere from 300 to 900 lumens, a CFL bulb emitting the same amount of light only uses from 13 to 16 watts, and LED light bulbs that produce that many lumens only use 6 to 8 watts of energy. As you can see, if you were to use LED light bulbs in all of your regular fixtures, you would be using quite a bit less energy and that would also save you money.
As we discuss energy, we can find another reason that more and more LED light bulbs are illuminating our way. LED light bulbs can run on low voltage as well as on regular voltage. Using low voltage fixtures is a great way to use less energy, and that could increase your energy cost savings. Because lower voltages can be used, these lights are also very good for battery operated applications such as flashlights.

As you can see, there are many great reasons why LED light bulbs are lighting up our world, and you may want to consider them the next time you need to replace a standard bulb.
