For a long time LED lights were primarily available for commercial use, but you can now buy reasonably priced LED lights for home use. While LED technology has been around for a long time, the semiconductor materials used in LED lights made them cost prohibitive for home use. With advances in technology, the costs for manufacturing LED lights have decreased and manufactures are now offering many types of LED lights for home. There are many reasons why it can be attractive to purchase LED lights for home use.
Many people value LED lights for home use because of the potential for cost savings. The initial cost for LED lights is a bit higher than the cost for conventional lights; however, it can almost be considered a one-time cost. LED lights can last for as many as 50,000 hours of continuous use, compared to the 1,200 hours usually provided by incandescent bulbs. Even with the frequent on and off use LED bulbs will get in a home setting; they can last 11 years or more. Because LED lights last so long, a homeowner will not spend as much time and money replacing light bulbs as they might with conventional bulbs.

Another great reason to use LED lights for home is the increased energy efficiency. LED lights use much less energy than incandescent bulbs to deliver the same amount of light. For example, an LED light using 6-8 watts of electricity can be compared to an incandescent light that uses 60 watts of electricity. Using LED lights for home in an example like this potentially save as much as $300 per year in operating cost and use almost 3000 fewer kilowatt hours. Saving almost 90% on electricity costs related to lighting can be a great reason to think about using LED lights in your home.
Many homeowners are doing more and more these days to protect the environment. Homeowners recycle paper, plastic and glass, and many people even compost. Environmental concerns can also be addressed through the use of LED lights for home. LED lights are safe for the environment and do not contain any toxic mercury. Incandescent lights do not contain mercury either, but compact fluorescent lights have become very popular in the last few years and they do contain a few micrograms of mercury which can become a serious environmental concern. LED lights are an environmentally safe alternative to CFL bulbs and are even more efficient. Due to the lower energy consumption of LED lights for home, they do not emit as much carbon dioxide as traditional bulbs. LED lights emit only about 10% of the carbon dioxide of incandescent bulbs and less than half that of compact fluorescents.

LED lights are available in many styles to fit the needs of most any home. In some cases, LED light bulbs can be used to replace conventional bulbs in existing light fixtures. This can be the most cost effective way to convert to LED lights; however, there are also many affordable LED light fixtures available.
